MEG's CANINE and FELINE FRIENDS

Penny

Penny, a German Short Haired Pointer, started eating a fresh food diet when she was 8 weeks old. She had two weeks of loose stools as she transitioned to the diet and at 16 months is a healthy and vibrant little girl. She loves her bones and has demonstrated the fine art of eating chicken and turkey necks to many people considering the raw diet. Penny loves to eat and can often be found in the kitchen, at mealtime, supervising the meal preparation.

Molly

At 11 years old, my precious, Molly, is the picture of health. Molly has been on a raw meat and bone diet since the spring of 1997, at the age of 6. The transition to this diet was relatively easy for Molly and the health benefits have been phenomenal. She has not experienced any of the usual health problems common to many dogs her age. Molly's teeth are white and clean, her coat is vibrant, her eyes are clear, and she is able to run and play free from any pain associated with arthritis. In addition to her natural diet Molly has regular chiropractic adjustments and acupuncture treatments. She has shown me how wonderfully easy the aging process can be.

Ecko Bear

Our wise, loving, wonderful, Ecko Bear, put herself on a fresh food diet when she was 13 years old. She simply refused to eat any more processed food. We were camping at Lake Powell when she decided raw meat and bones were the only way to go. Up to this time Ecko had been plagued with fleas, causing painful hot spots and sleepless nights. Her coat was thin and brittle, arthritis was limiting her activity, she was stinky and had terrible breath. Within a few months of this diet change she became a new pooch. The fleas disappeared, her coat grew in thick and soft, and suddenly she could move and play free of the pain caused by her arthritis. The bone chewing cleaned her teeth and breath. She became a much happier member of our family. Ecko passed in August of 2002, at the age of 16.

When Shasta Bear joined our family, at 8 weeks of age, we immediately started her on a diet of raw meat, bones, and vegetables. She loves all the Meg's products we give her and at 10 months is a thriving, healthy, chocolate lab. Ecko continues to watch over us and is a constant reminder that a fresh food diet will keep our Shasta Bear with us for many happy, healthy years to come.

Burt

Burt, a Chesapeake Bay retriever, chocolate brown, with white on his chest, is a special boy. He loves to swim and jump up in front of me so he can look me square in the eye. I consider him my Velcro dog, as I can always turn around and bump right into his cold nose, or step on his little brown toes. Burt also has an assortment of health issues, I could write a book about his numerous trips to the vet, and live comfortably on what I have spent, pre-BARF. Burt hurt his shoulder at 18 months and x-rays revealed a serious case of bursitis. The specialist informed me that as Burt aged, I would be pumping him full of drugs just to keep him mobile and comfortable. Sure enough, at about 6, Burt started to slow down. A short walk would have him limping for days. No longer would he bounce up and look me in the eye when he greeted me at the door. He was rapidly losing the movement in his shoulder, and aspirin wasn't working. Half a buffered aspirin would cause him stomach upset within 24 hours. I tried all the alternative pain relievers (glucosamine, chondroitin, yucca, green-lipped mussel) but to no avail. Burt just couldn't hang with the other dogs, and he was getting depressed. I could hear the vet specialist saying all those years ago, "All you can do is keep him comfortable; he probably won't live past 8 or 9". But I wasn't ready to give up; Burt still loved swimming, and would swim endlessly, if I let him. Luckily, in 1997, I discovered the raw diet, and it has helped Burt tremendously. He had always had horrible teeth, in fact he was missing so many teeth, I wasn't sure he would be able to chew the bones. He proved me wrong as he ripped and chewed his bones down to nothing. His teeth stopped rotting away and his limp disappeared. It was about this time that my friend Jeanie Collins told me about Dr. Rena in Colfax who does acupuncture. So between his acupuncture and the raw diet, Burt was a new dog, pain and drug free. Burt is 11 years old; he now swims with a life jacket, and he walks a little slower, but he continues to chew bones enthusiastically and has regular acupuncture and chiropractic adjustments. Oh, and he still does the happy bounce.

Nikopotomus

Niko is a 4 year old Akita Rotweiler mix? (adopted at 1 year of age). Before going on Raw whole foods diet consisting of fresh meat and veggies he itched and chewed the fur off his front legs. Now now he is fine. He is 85 lbs and says that kibble makes him thirsty and itchy. He loves tofu even over beef steak but gets golf ball size welts if he eats too much of it. He gets meat and other protein sources like Quorn and Nature Burger just for variety. Sometimes he eats Kibble as a junk food treat, but very rarely and only if it is high quaulity and contains no "by-products".

Sheena is a 2 year old husky mix ( adopted at 1 year with her puppies ) She is quite a bit more dignified than Niko at dinner time but she is also a vegetable snob. She likes vegetables much better when they are mixed with Peanut butter. She loves Quorn and Nature Burger ( well cooked) and steamed dinosuar kale. She wieghs 64 lbs but is quite good at keeping Niko in line. She likes meat and very occasionaly gets kibble as long as it is high quality and contains no "by-products".

Osha Root

"The first year of my life is a blur of wandering the streets, filtering garbage cans, and making friends of the neighborhood. I was skinny, had some sort of fungus on my belly, and some said I was too hyper for my own good. When my favorite person adopted me, she started feeding me raw meat. I get a variety ‹ lamb, beef, chicken, turkey ‹ I'll eat it all mixed with some ground veggies. I enjoy the flavor; my person enjoys that I gained weight, that the fungus disappeared and I've calmed down ‹ somewhat. We alternate with meals of kibble (Wellness), but it hurts my belly when I'm not used to it."

Lundy

Lundy is a 2 year old German Shepherd weighing 76 lbs. He has been eating a mostly raw diet since he was a small puppy. His favorite food is turkey neck, closely followed by a mixture of ground turkey, cottage cheese, yogurt and salmon oil. He eats vegetables hidden in the turkey mix but picks out all peas just like a kid.

Snoopy

Snoopy, a 3- year old Yorkshire terrier has been enjoying Meg’s products, since the spring of 2002. His bad breath and body odor prompted the change from processed foods to a fresh food diet. Within a few months of this diet change his nasty breath disappeared and his teeth became shinny and white. Snoopy has beautiful shiny fur. He always looks like he has just been to the beauty parlor. He loves to gnaw on 2 inch pieces of lamb shanks and turkey necks. If you were to ask him, Snoopy would tell you his most important job is watching over his wonderful human, Fred. Now that Snoopy feels so good, it is much easier to pay attention to and keep an eye on Fred.

Nellie

Nellie, a 3 year old Golden Retriever, has been on a raw diet for the last two years. Prior to that, she had various digestive ailments. Today, she weighs a healthy 70 lbs., her coat is beautiful and her teeth are pearly white. She loves her meat and bones but also loves a half piece of organic toast with her breakfast. She and her best buddy Emma (and new brother Harley) are rescued goldens and hope those in search of a golden will check out the NORCAL Golden Retriever Rescue Group's website www.golden-rescue.org.

Emma is also a 3 year old Golden Retriever and, along with Nellie, has enjoyed the raw diet for the last two years. Emma loves all food, especially her ground lamb and bones. She too has a beautiful coat and nice white teeth. She loves swimming, hiking, getting brushed and just hanging with her "family".

Harley is the most recent addition to Nellie and Emma's family. Harley is 7 months old and started out as a foster pup with his new family but they quickly fell in love with him. Who wouldn't? While he was on kibble for the first few days, he let it be known that he wanted to eat the same food as Nellie and Emma. He loves his raw ground and goes wild for his bones. He runs into the kitchen to look for Mom when he is done so she can give him more.

Sam Sam, a healthy, active, bright, year and half old, German Shepard, has been eating a fresh food diet since he was conceived. Sam's mother is also a raw fed pooch. He loves a big lamb shank for dinner or a couple of turkey necks. While bones keep Sam busy, he also gets meals of ground turkey or lamb mixed with vegetables and cottage cheese. Sam loves to chase balls, go for walks, and ride in the car. If you asked him,Sam would tell you,he has a very smart family and "boy do they know how to feed a fellow."

Sophie

Upon meeting Grace and having been told the benefits of raw diet, I must admit I was skeptical. Everything just sounded too good. But the dilemma I was facing with my 12 year old Lab/Chesapeake Bay Retriever mix and her arthritis was enough encouragement for me to give it a try. Amazing. The results were very quick for us. Sophie's activity increased greatly, clearly alleviating the pain from her arthritis. 9 months into the diet and people mistake Sophie for a dog half her age. I've since put my other two dogs on it. Eliminate the problems before they start.

Starbright

Sue

Starbright Sue, a 10 year old Weimaraner, has been eating a fresh food diet for almost a year. Before this diet change, she had constant urinary leaking and a very arthritic elbow. Sue's arthritis was so crippling and painful she could hardly walk and was unable to go up or down the stairs. Since Sue has been on her new diet she has the energy she had when she was 5 years old. She loves her 3 mile walks, swimming, and chasing geese. Sue does her daily exercises by rolling on her back on any nice lawn, carpet, or other interesting surfaces. She had surgery on her arthritic elbow and receives regular acupuncture treatments and water therapy to help maintain mobility in her joint. Sue lost 3 molars so rather than chewing on bones, she gets bone dust, whole carrots, and loves to carry around and chew on raw tracheas. Due to her health issues, Sue is no longer vaccinated. In spite of our decision not to vaccinate Sue, we have been able to maintain her dog license with an exemption letter from her veterinarian. Starbright Sue is our very special angel and dear member of our family. She loves to ride in the car and always takes her place in the passenger seat.

Kaisha

Kaisha is a 15 year old shepherd mix. She has been on a raw diet for three years. She has been fortunate not to have been plagued with the usual old dog health problems, and the couple of health issues she has experienced she has bounced right back from thanks to a fresh raw diet. Her recent trip to the vet (of which are rare) the results of her blood work were better than that of a 11-12 year old dog! She is proud to say that she still has every one of her teeth and no doggy breath! Although this photo was taken when she was 8, she still looks the same, minus a few pounds. A raw diet is worth every penny, especially when it keeps your best friend healthy and extremely happy.

Savannah

My sweet Savannah, a 7 year old, German Short haired pointer, started eating a fresh food diet in 2001. Here is Savannah with a Meg's Meats bone hanging out of her mouth like a doggie stoagie. She is complete food hound and loves her treats. She rushes through dinner to get to "dessert": a delicious dried lamb part.

My handsome Bucky is a 7 year old German short haired pointer. "Before going on the raw meat diet, Bucky weighed in at a bony 65#. He didn't enjoy his food very much, had very flakey, itchy skin and pussy eyes. He now loves eating (a pound of Meg's Meat a day) and weighs 74# at last count. His ribs don't show, his coat is sleek and soft, and his eye problems have cleared up."

Harmony

Harmony, our darling 15 month old, yellow lab has been on a fresh food diet since October of 2002. Harmony has healthy pink gums with strong pearly white teeth. She goes nuts for lamb shanks and has beautiful muscle definition for a yellow lab runt. Harmony has a VERY active lifestyle and gets lots of exercise. We transitioned Harmony to Meg's Meats when she was 6 months old. People are always commenting on how healthy and happy she looks. Harmony LOVES water, in any form, snow, streams, lakes. Her favorite activities are fetching sticks in Lake Tahoe, playing Frisbee, joining us on hikes, or just hanging around with her pack-family.

Einstein

All the dogs in my family have been enjoying Meg's Meats products for nearly three years. Even the little Chihuahuas tolerate and thrive on the meat and bones. While small, they are mighty and have no difficulties taking larger bones from my Brittany, Einstein. Bone chewing is a great way to keep those "little mouths" clean and prevent bad teeth, typical of the smaller breeds. My Champion Chihuahua, Harger's Tara Ashley Rose "Itty-Bit" never "blew her coat" - once she began eating Meg's Meats. AKC confirmation judges always comment on the fantastic condition of her coat and nice white teeth. Not only do my dogs enjoy the benefits of a fresh food diet the rescue dogs I foster thrive on this diet as well. As a pet dog trainer and canine behavior consultant I have seen many behavior issues eliminated with the transition to a fresh food diet.

Fred

In October 2003,Fred, my 4-year old Cocker Spaniel, began scratching and chewing. Our veterinarian was unable to come up with a definitive diagnosis and within a month, the skin irritation had accelerated. Fred was driving us nuts with his constant scratching and chewing, which resulted in a hairless tail and reddened areas on his legs. Back we went to the vet who gave Fred an injection of depomedrol to stop the itching. This gave Fred about 24-hours of relief. Fred was then started on a week of Prednisone, which resulted in a nasty personality change and after researching the effect of long term steroid therapy on the body I stopped the prednisone. We did an ELISA test and began to eliminate those things Fred tested allergic to. No luck! My vet then suggested a prescription brand allergy dog food. This diet change was against my better judgment, as I tried to feed Fred naturally (brown rice, raw meat, fruit, lots of raw vegetables), but decided to give it a try. For the following month Fred was constipated, itchy, and still driving us nuts despite getting 3 capsules of Benadryl a day.

In January, out of desperation I began searching the web for answers and discovered the Meg's Meats web site. I e-mailed Grace, who promptly replied. We emailed each other for several days and then I called her. After speaking with Grace for an hour and a half I decided to put Fred back on a fresh food diet this time eliminating all sugars (no more fruit or grains, only pulped green vegetables and raw meat). I also started adding raw bones (beef shoulder bones, chicken wings, turkey wings) to his meals. It is now April and I am thrilled to report, Fred is no longer scratching and is drug free. If I add grain, fruit or raw carrots to his diet, the scratching begins. I keep 2 homeopathic formulas on hand for these times, Rhus Tox, 6X, and a liquid, Dr. Goodpet's Scratch Free Formula.

Fred has recently been back to the vet for a check up and received a "RAVE" review. The vet had NEVER seen Fred this healthy. Fred has struggled with yeasty ears for years and for the first time in his life his ears were clean. His teeth were tartar free and he lost about 3 1/2 pounds. Fred is now lean, muscular and feels so good he is once again as playful as a puppy! The vet was amazed and questioned me about including raw bones in Fred's diet. I gave him Meg's website and others to read about the B.A.R.F. diet. I started adding safflower oil to Fred's diet and a "healthy powder" found in Dr. Pitcairn's Natural Health for Dogs and Cats, which consists of nutritional yeast, lecithin, kelp, eggshells, and vitamin C. It took about 3 months to see an improvement in Fred's condition! His hair has grown back, the red spots are gone, and he is back to his normal, cheerful self! Thank you, Grace, we are indebted to you for your help and support and Fred sends you big wet kiss!!

PJ

Grace, I met you at Scraps and you convinced me to try your frozen lamb product. I though my Jack Russell Terrier, PJ, was allergic to lamb because he couldn't tolerate the dehydrated Prairie lamb product. I want you to know that he has tolerated your lamb just fine and LOVES it. I have bought more and it' is his favorite meal. Thanks so much, I'm really glad I met you at Scraps. PJ also loves the turkey necks. Thanks for a great product. I loved your interview of David Lowell, DVM. It is very good and in depth. I learned answers to many of my questions. PJ really has benefited tremendously from the acupuncture and the herbs. Thanks again!

Proteus

These two brothers are the official Meg’s Meats greeters, however, until December 2003 they protested eating a fresh food diet.  With the addition of fresh whole rabbit to the Meg’s product line, they were once again presented with the prospect.  This time, after a day of protest, they stopped their boycott and began to eat. They vomited occasionally during the first 2 weeks as they made the transition to a raw meat diet. Rabbit remains their favorite meal but they have expanded their diet to include venison, turkey, and sardines.  They can’t quite remember what the fuss was all about and are very happy with the new menu.

Valentine
Lassie

At 9 weeks, Lassie was given a 50% chance of survival due to severe diarrhea and an upper respiratory infection.  She was considered un-adoptable because of these health issues.  Initially, I tried conventional processed foods but the diarrhea continued.  Within 2 days of switching to a fresh meat diet, Lassie had normal stools for the first time in her young life.  It took 4 weeks for Lassie to recognize bones as food instead of playing with them and now enjoys her bones in the comfort of a crate.  This keeps her from dragging them all over the house.   Now our little terrorist enjoys eating ground turkey, venison, cottage cheese, rabbit, and chicken necks with occasional pulped vegetables.  Lassie is a healthy, happy, vibrant, lean, muscular, 6 month old kitten with normal stools.  She still has an occasional sneeze, which is an indication that her immune system is developing.  To support this development I have included salmon oil and kelp in her diet.  Our darling little scamp now rules the house terrorizing and attacking her favorite pooch, Lucy.  She can generally be found lounging on the television, tapping the screen when something interests her, and is fascinated when the bigger cats appear.

Sylvie

Hello, my name is Sylvie, and here's my story...I am a 12-year-old kitty that battled inflammatory bowel disease for approximately 5 years. At my worst, I was suffering from painful and frequent bloody loose stools, terrible bowel odor, weight loss, and inappropriate soiling. When I first started stooling outside my box, my family took me to the vet who suggested adding more boxes, moving the location of the boxes, and offering boxes with and without a hood. When I didn't change my behavior, I went to the vet again. Next, came my first prescribed diet change...no success. I received "behavior modification", and was locked in the bathroom at night with my litter box so I couldn't mess up the house. I still had accidents. Off to the vet again and a shot of antibiotics. Maybe it was a urinary tract infection that was causing all of this. More soiling on the carpet, back into my carrier, and to the vet I went. Prescribed diet change number two, and a shot of steroids. I improved for a while and gained weight, but six weeks later my symptoms returned, and I was back at the vet for more steroids. Six weeks...steroids. Six weeks...steroids. Six weeks...steroids. Was this cycle ever going to end? I tried to be a good kitty. My family was so patient. Finally, they heard about the fresh food diet. I was supplemented with Colostrum and Psyllium initially, but now it's just an occasional dash of F-Biotic. I am enjoying the carnivorous diet I was meant to eat. After just a few weeks, I had no more inappropriate soiling. My bowel/bladder odor has just about disappeared. I'm having an occasional small, formed stool instead of 3 or 4 bouts of painful, bloody diarrhea per day. Most significantly, I haven't had to make a single trip to the vet again for a shot of steroids. I'm not only feeling well, but I'm looking good, too...my fur is so thick and shiny, with less shedding and dandruff. Best of all, my family have become true believers in the fresh food diet!! Meow.
