Our Mission

Our mission at Meg’s Meats is to promote the optimal health of our animals through fresh food diets. We believe we become what we eat and thrive or not as a result of our diet choices. So what is health? Webster’s Dictionary defines health as:

The condition of being sound in body, mind, and spirit. Freedom from physical disease or pain, the general condition of the body.

I like this definition of health because it connects body, mind, and soul. Through our food choices we not only impact our body we also affect our mind and soul. This is also true for our animals.

It has been well established that all disease states can be related to inflammation gone wild in the body. The primary cause of inflammation is sugar consumption. People on the average consume over 100 pounds of sugar a year and this number is on the rise. This is also true for our animals that are fed a primarily kibble based diet. Grain, such as corn and wheat, found in most kibble break down to sugar as it is metabolized by the body. Even the grain free kibble contains sugar in ingredients such as apples, carrots, and peas.

Obesity, arthritis, diabetes, cancer, autoimmune disease, allergies, and hypothyroidism are all associated with inflammation in the body. Our animals suffer similar disease processes that most Americans do and the thing that connects us all is dependence on a processed sugar laden diet. Hippocrates wrote, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Consuming processed food containing rancid fats and ingredients that many of us cannot pronounce let alone recognize as food is compromising our health and the health of our companion animals.

At Meg’s Meats we know you become what you eat because we have seen, first hand over the last 15 years, the transformation as animals are given the opportunity to consume real food. Allergies, arthritis, irritable bowel are just a few of the conditions that have been alleviated or resolved as sugar is eliminated from the diet. As many of us know there is never just one thing that aids this transformation but this is a big first step. My sister’s little miniature schnauzer, Poco, who we estimate to be about 13 years old is a wonderful example. She has been enjoying the benefits of a fresh food diet for the last 8 years however something was a bit off. Her mouth did not smell good and she was not feeling well. She had a complete blood panel including thyroid and D levels. We found that her thyroid and D levels were critically low and she needed some dental work. After being placed on thyroid and Vitamin D3 supplements and having 13 teeth removed she feels great. Two months later her thyroid and D levels are close to normal, her allergy symptoms are gone and she is acting like a puppy.

My definition of health and how to achieve it has evolved and continues to evolve as I take classes, listen to webinars and read. One of my favorite books to share with people is, Not Fit For a Dog, the truth about processed dog and cat food, by Michael Fox and two other veterinarians. It helps you to understand why processed food is hurting our animals. This book can be found on Amazon and is a very easy read.

I hope you enjoy our new website and find the information helpful as you begin to create a healthier environment for yourself and your animals. I would like to thank Maja Thaler and the folks at SDBX Studio for their wonderful work and thoughtful suggestions to help make our website better for you our clients, friends, and family as you embark on this life altering journey of health. My hope through this blog is to encourage, support, empower, all of you as we take this journey together.

In Health,
Grace
